Nutella on mutli-grain bread. I gotta admit, for a while I was hatin' Nutella, but this gals has changed her tune. Looking at the weather today, I'll be keeping my eyes on the Mid-South as that is "home" for us -- family and friends. Prayers already sent up for reader Denise and her people. Two tornadoes have been seen in her general area. At the time I heard of the weather, I texted her and she was on her way to safety. The sirens were already going off... (I need to take a xanax!)
Yesterday I spent a day in the studio. The first project is a squishy toy. I got the pattern from a free demo at Gathering Fabric, my local quilt shop. Isn't it cute? I really had fun making this!
It's going to a friend who needs some cheering up. This is the card I made up to go with it. Just a quick ink and watercolor piece.
I started working on my "Royalty" piece... It's a tiara. I have no final design in mind. Just doing this by stream of consciousness crafting. I figure that this way I can show you how I came about my final design. After looking at some of my "pinned" crowns, I remembered a piece of fabric that I had in my stash.
The main design part of the fabric had a cool shape I wanted to play with. I wasn't really nutty about the fabric itself (colorway issue), but the shapes intrigued me. So I fused a piece to some very stiff interfacing (Dritz brand Innerfuse) and cut out the pieces.
To one piece, I took some sari silk strips and gathered them on the back. To make the gathers, I just took the strip and pressed it out. Then I set my basic straight stitch to the longest length possible, put the tension on "0", and stitched close to the edge. Then I grabbed the bobbin thread and "gathered" the strip loosely. I wasn't aiming for perfection here. I want this to be very organic, full of color, and whimsical.
Then I decided I still didn't like the fabric, so I fused another piece on top of that. Enter the Kaffe Fassett scraps from my tablecloth project. The tiara also needed some bling. So, I started sewing on sequins and beads. I really wish the photo shows the sparkle.
I am really enjoying the handwork so far. It's actually quite tedious, but I find it relaxing. It's the hands-on aspect I like. It also allows me to think.
Go out and make it a good day, y'all! For those of you in the weather's path -- be safe.

Oh my gosh...that little owl is so cute! I need to show it to my oldest granddaughter...she is just crazy for owls!
Nutella and *anything* is a pretty good combo! Love the owl pillow, Jean! Joc loves owls like I love pumpkins!! And we *so* appreciate your prayers on our behalf! We're gearing up for round 2! :)
Cute, cute owl!! I'm intrigued with the tiara...I'll be watching that one:)
We're diligently watching the weather. All the schools let out early so I hope people are hunkering down.
Nutella on whole wheat (or multigrain!) is actually one of my favorite snacks. I'm actually craving some right now after reading this. lol
I want to come and play with you and rub your new books too....oh you are having so much fun.
Missing you.
